Harris Garrard Academy
Our students have gained in-depth wider experiences, developed core essential skills and confidence, all while forming strong lasting relationships and positive memories.
Overview
Harris Garrard Academy is an academy serving early years through to Sixth Form that aims to provide our students with the education and experiences required to become economically active and fulfilled citizens who lead enjoyable, healthy and active lifestyles throughout their adulthood.
Cory partnership
Cory has supported our students to participate in various activities including the Industrial Cadets programme since 2020/21. This programme provides our students with a Cory mentor and projects to help them develop core essential skills including leadership, teamwork, and resilience. This was especially evident in the 2020/21 cohort who finished their projects during Covid; our Cory mentor was able to continue to support the students remotely and saw them through to winning an award. Each year the students that have participated have spoken highly of the opportunity and the skills developed.
In addition to the Industrial Cadets programme, Cory has worked with our school to give students a programme of activities with Crossness Pumping Station to link historical and current waste management as well as looking at innovations that will be part of the future.
Cory has also engaged our students annually in the Bexley Eco-Festival, from the online event during Covid and the live event with our Eco-council at Cygnet Square, through to the Fashion Show at London South East Colleges where our students put on a live event with media, catering and music to showcase sustainable fashions.
End result
Our students have gained an appreciation and respect for the amount of work involved in achieving their goals in STEM as well as the importance of a community approach to sustainability. This has helped them learn to be independent learners and leaders in the school and in their community. All of this has contributed to continued academic success and a passion to continue their pursuit of a STEM career. Our students are all eager to continue to work with Cory on another project, and the younger years are waiting for the opportunity to step up.
