The Isle of Dogs Sea Cadet Unit

The Isle of Dogs Sea Cadet Unit is a youth organisation that provides opportunities for young people in the Isle of Dogs area to participate in a variety of water-based activities, as well as other activities during the winter months. The Unit is based in two state schools on the Isle of Dogs, George Green's School and Canary Wharf College, and is open to young people in Years 7 to 11 (ages 11 to 18).

During the summer term, the Unit offers weekly sessions for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and windsurfing in the local Royal Victoria docks and Millwall Docks. In the winter, the Unit provides enrichment trips, such as visits to various locations, ice skating, climbing, and Thames Boat trips. Overall, the Isle of Dogs Sea Cadet Unit provides a fun and educational experience for young people in the area on and off the water.

Cory Partnership with the Isle of Dogs Sea Cadet Unit

The partnership between Cory and the Isle of Dogs Sea Cadets has given us the opportunity to employ young people as Royal Yachting Association (RYA) peer instructors for the Cadets. They are fantastic but more importantly give the Cadets a role model of what they will be able to achieve in a few years giving a focus and a new career that they would never have thought of without Cory’s help.

We have also been able to fund our legacy program which enables Cadets to attend RYA Regional Training Windsurfing and Regional Winter Training.

We have welcomed the opportunity to see Cory’s operations firsthand, giving our Cadets an insight into a river-based business. We have also participated in Cory’s environmental art competition at the Northumberland Wharf transfer station in Tower Hamlets, bringing us all together to produce environmentally focused art.

Cory has also helped us behind the scenes with funds for admin which is essential to the running of the Unit.

End Result

Through our partnership with Cory we have enhanced young people's lives, taught new skills, and provided enrichment for Cadets as well as our instructors, parents and the schools where we are based.

In the future we wish to continue to progress the legacy program to enable young Cadets to be the new RYA Instructors of the future, giving them skills for life. We also hope to visit Cory again to see its river operations, and to expand the Unit to 50 Cadets.
