Preventing waste and growing the reuse economy

At Cory, we’re always looking to highlight practical ways to build a more sustainable future, and that includes giving old items a second life.

Waste prevention is one of the most powerful actions we can take to protect the environment. While recycling has its place, reusing what we already have saves even more energy, resources and emissions.

From waste to working again

We recently partnered with REWORK, a social enterprise that repairs and refurbishes unwanted electrical items. With our support, REWORK launched a new online shop that brings refurbished household appliances directly to families across the country.

Instead of being scrapped, things like washing machines, fridges, and ovens are now being carefully restored and made available at affordable prices. That means less waste going to landfill, fewer raw materials being used, and more people able to access quality goods without the cost of buying new. It’s a win-win for both the planet and for local communities.

Why reuse matters

The reuse economy is all about making the most of what we already have. Whether it’s clothing, furniture, tech, or white goods, choosing to repair and reuse keeps materials in circulation longer and reduces our need for new production.

Here’s why it matters:

Reduces emissions: Making new appliances involves mining, manufacturing, and transporting materials and each step generates carbon.

Protects natural resources: Reuse helps conserve raw materials like metal, plastic and water.

Cuts down on waste: Large items like fridges and cookers can take decades, sometime centuries, to break down in landfill.

Supports the circular economy: By keeping products in use, we move away from the take-make-dispose model.

Helps households: Refurbished items are often significantly cheaper than brand-new versions, helping reduce financial pressure.

A practical step towards Cory’s sustainability goals

Our partnership with REWORK supports one of our key sustainability targets: to reduce waste and grow the reuse economy. We are actively working to divert more materials away from waste streams and into repair, reuse, and resale schemes.

This approach requires a mindset shift. Encouraging people to think about what they are throwing away and recognising the value of used items – both crucial steps toward reducing our environmental footprint. The project also supports the local community. By offering apprenticeships and skills training in repair and refurbishment, REWORK is helping to build a new workforce for the green economy, one that is focused on sustainability rather than throwaway culture.

What you can do

Preventing waste is about changing how we think and shop. You don’t need a warehouse or a workshop to take part in the reuse economy. Here are a few easy ways to get involved:

  • Before buying new, check if refurbished options are available.
  • Donate working appliances or electronics to local reuse schemes or charities.
  • Try repairing items at home or visit a local Repair Café.
  • Shop second-hand when possible, from furniture and appliances to clothing and accessories.
  • Encourage others to reuse by showing that it works.
